Water Supply

Approximately fifteen and a half million cubic metres of water was produced in 2008.

Water Quality

In accordance with national drinking water regulations, 170 check samples and 40 audit samples were carried out on public water schemes, 28 check samples and 5 audit samples were carried out on Group Water Schemes and approximately 60 check samples were carried out on private water supplies. Each check sample analysis consisted of 15 parameters, while each audit sample analysis consisted of 48 parameters. Check samples are analysed at the Wexford County Council laboratory at Mayglass, while the more comprehensive audit analyses are carried out by a private sector laboratory.

In 2008, the Protocol for dealing with microbiological/chemical exceedances in drinking water quality was revised and agreed by Wexford County Council and the Health Service Executive.

Water Conservation

 

·        Overall the County leakage has been reduced to 39% (from 51% in 2000)

·        Data from eight major treatment plants are monitored remotely, and network flow readings are transmitted daily to SCADA in Mayglass Central Office.

·        Kiltealy Spring and borehole upgraded and sending signals to SCADA system.

·        Alarms on reservoir levels working through the SCADA system.

·        475 leaks were repaired in 2008.

·        Hydraulic models created for the Fardystown and Gorey/Courtown & Gorey Regional Water Supply Scheme

·        Additional chlorine and turbidity monitors at Castlemoyle water treatment plant.

·        Pressure Reducing Valve at Ashfield Cross, Rosslare Strand installed and providing savings of 200cum/day.

·        48,810m of water mains and 22,410m of sewers were entered on to electronic digital maps in 2008. A total of 1,774 km of public water mains, 233 km of group water scheme mains and 534 km of sewers have now been mapped.

Rural Water Programme

South Leinster DBO  Schemes

Mullaun Group Water Scheme and Borrmount Group Water Scheme Treatment Plants were commissioned by EPS Ltd., Mallow, Co. Cork in November, 2008 and March, 2008 respectively.

 

Process Proving on Blackstairs Group Water Scheme Treatment Plant commenced in December, 2008. 

Universal metering contract was completed on the Killinerin Group Water Scheme in July, 2008.

Part 8 Planning was approved in July, 2008 and September, 2008 for the replacement of three reservoirs, and the erection of security fencing and construction of access road at an existing reservoir for the Blackstairs Group Water Scheme.  Closing Date for receipt of tenders for this contract was 12th December, 2008.

Rural Water Takeover Schemes

A supplementary Preliminary Report on the Ballymoney Group Water Scheme was submitted to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in July, 2008 and approval was received in August, 2008 to the connection of this scheme to the Gorey Regional Water Supply Scheme and to the renewal of the existing group scheme distribution network at an approximate cost of €1,000,000.

Approximately 3.7km of distribution network on the Monamolin Group Water Scheme was renewed and Department approval was given in October, 2008 to the connection of the scheme to the Gorey Regional Water Supply Scheme.

Approximately 8.1km of distribution network on the Askamore Group Water Scheme was renewed.

New Group Schemes

Work was completed on eight private group water schemes and the County Council network was extended to serve four newly formed group water schemes. 

Individual Well Grants

Approximately 230 applications for single well grants were received in 2008.  A total of 4,730 applications have been received since the start of the scheme.
