Waste Water Treatment
In 2009, sewage from a population equivalent of approx. 100,000 was treated at 75 plants throughout the County at a cost of approx. €6,000,000.
Sludge from these plants and from smaller septic tank systems is dewatered and composted before re-use in mine reclamation. Some sludge is lime stabilized and land spread in accordance with the Use of Sewage Sludge in Agriculture Guidance Notes.
