New Ross Traffic Management Scheme
The next phase of the New Ross Traffic Management Scheme is now in operation. The scheme involves revising the traffic circulation in the town centre and improving the capacity at the O'Hanrahan Bridge junction through the use of new traffic signals.
The main changes to the current situation are as follows:
1. There will be no right turn from the Quays onto Quay Street.
This right turn will now be located at new traffic lights at the Quays/Charles Street junction.
2. Traffic travelling north on the Quays (i.e. from the Wexford direction towards the bridge) wishing to access the Town Centre/R700 (Cherries road)/Mary Street/Irishtown direction will now turn right at the new traffic lights at the bottom of Charles Street.
3. The current traffic flow on Charles Street will be reversed (i.e. the new flow will be from the Quays to South Street). At the top of Charles Street (Charles Street/South Street junction) traffic can either turn left or right. Turn left for R700 (Cherries road)/Mary Street/Irishtown or turn right for all other routes (Priory Street/Cross Lane, etc.)
4. The current traffic flow on South Street from Charles Street to the Tholsel will be reversed (i.e. the new flow will be from the top of Charles Street towards the Tholsel).
5. Traffic travelling north on South Street (from Charles Street to the Tholsel) will have to yield to traffic on Mary Street at the Tholsel. Turn left for R700 (Cherries road) or right for Mary Street/Irishtown.
6. Traffic coming from Waterford over the bridge can use two lanes along the Quay to the new traffic lights at the bottom of Charles Street. Use the left lane to turn up Charles Street, or the right lane for straight ahead (Wexford direction).
7. Traffic coming from Waterford over the bridge travelling to the R700 (Cherries Road) direction will use Quay Street/North Street as usual.
8. There will be no access to Mary Street from Quay Street (i.e. left turn at the Tholsel only).
9. Traffic coming from Waterford over the bridge travelling to Mary Street/Irishtown direction will continue over the Quay, turn left at the bottom of Charles Street, left onto South Street and right onto Mary Street at the Tholsel.
10. Traffic travelling down Mary Street will have to turn right onto North Street at the Tholsel (there will be no left turn to South Street form Mary Street).
A comprehensive signing programme will be put in place to assist motorists.
Work will continue on the scheme after the introduction of new system on Wednesday.
Motorists are asked to be alert to the new traffic lights and signs and to please exercise caution in the area.
