Private Vehicle Testing – NCT

Private Vehicles are required to have passed an NCT (National Car Test) in order to be considered road worthy. An NCT is required after the first four years of the vehicles life, every two years thereafter until the vehicle is 10 years old and annually after that. You do not need an NCT cert. in order to tax your vehicle. However, it is a legal requirement to have a current NCT certificate. Commercial vehicle and Motor Caravan Testing - Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW).
Commercial vehicles and Motor Caravans are required to have passed a roadworthiness test in order to obtain a CRW (Certificate of Roadworthiness).
Commercial vehicles must be tested when they are one year old and annually after that.
Motor Caravans must be tested when they are four years old and every two years thereafter until the vehicle is 10 years old, and every year after that again.

DOE tests are carried out by specifically appointed garages in the county (see below.) When the vehicle has passed the test, the Garage will give a Pass Statement. This is NOT the Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW). This pass statement must be produced at the Motor Tax Office with a fee of €6 for vehicles under 3,500 kgs. and €13 for vehicles over 3,500kgs. in order to obtain the CRW.
NB. A vehicle cannot be taxed unless it has a current CRW.

Vehicles Exempt from Vehicle Testing:
ONLY Vintage/Veteran Vehicles (over 30 years old from the date of registration), Tractors, Diggers and Forklifts etc. and Commercially Taxed Mobile Machines ????are Exempt from Vehicle Testing. All other vehicles must be tested under the relevant regime.
