Theory Test

Under the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) (Amendment) Regulations, 2001 a theory test certificate must be obtained before you can apply for a first learner permit.

The theory test is divided into the categories set out in Column 1 of the following table and a relevant theory test certificate must be furnished to a licensing authority for a first learner permit application in Column 2.

The Theory Test is carried out by the Driver Theory Testing Service.

The Driver Theory Test Application Form is also available in the Motor Taxation Office.

The fee for the test is €40.60 inclusive of V.A.T.

If you already hold a full licence and are applying for a first provisional in ANY new category, you must hold the relevant Theory Test for for that category. If you have previously passed the relevant category of Theory Test to obtain a licence, you will not be required to sit the test again.  However, if you have not passed the relevant category of Theory Test (REGARDLESS OF CURRENT FULL CATEGORIES HELD,) you must sit the relevant test before applying for the permit.
