Summary: Originally from County Cork Tony Woulfe first came to Gorey in 1952 where he worked in the Post Office. At that time Gorey was a small country town, “quite depressed”, with many young men moving to England for work. Gorey got a great lift when it hosted the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in 1962. Tony married Tess in 1957 and recalls the difficulties involved in getting a bank loan to build their house. When the idea of a credit union was suggested Tony became involved and became one of the founder members. A meeting took place on the 16th of March 1966 in the Railway Hotel. A nucleus of sixteen put in a £1 each and Gorey Credit Union was born! Tony also talks of his passion for cycling and woodcarving. His skills as a woodcarver are constantly being called upon.
