Wafer, Daniel (Dan)
Part 1
Part 2
Date of Birth: 24th December 1934
Place of Birth: Ballygarret, Co. Wexford
Date Interviewed: 6th November 2009
Summary: Dan Wafer uses his vast store of memories and knowledge to describe the Ballygarrett area as it was in his time. Once there were 360 thatched cottages in the region but only 7 remain. The first bell of the church came from a ship and its seats are reputed to be built from pitch-pine from the Iriwaddy. Arthur Guinness was a landlord in the area. Dan talks of the families who lived and worked locally and of the emigration which lead to a strong connection with Texas. The monument in the church grounds celebrates this link with America. Dan recalls helping his parents in the shop in Ballygarrett. Drinking water came from a pump nearby and when this got blocked his father would be lowered into the depths of the well to repair it.
