Summary: Bridget Power’s mother was from Ballyhack although Bridget herself was born in England where she spent her formative years. She recalls WW2 starting on her father’s birthday and hated the sound of the sirens and the heavy drone of the German bombers. Bridget left school when she was fourteen and moved into a house to look after two little children. She then went to work in a shop and bakery but didn’t like it. Bridget always enjoyed visiting her relatives in Ballyhack so she decided to move to Ireland. She was interviewed by Lady Templemore and started working as a domestic servant in Dunbrody House – she believes her English accent helped her secure the position! Bridget went on to become the cook for the Templemores and describes the work involved catering for dinner and shooting parties. At a time when houses in the locality had no electricity or running water Dunbrody House had both and Lord Templemore would have a bath every morning and evening.
