Summary: Lar was born in Monageer and has lived in Monageer House for most of his life. The house was bought by his grandfather in 1908 and was originally thatched with walls that are 5 feet thick at the base. Lar has farmed for most of his life and recalls that 6 men were employed on his parent’s farm when he was a boy. Horses were used for most of the work at that time but he remembers the purchase of their first tractor on the day that King George of England was buried in 1952. Macra na Feirme played a big part in Lar’s life and led to him getting involved in debating, public speaking and drama. He has always been interested in history, especially local, and he became historian at the Boolavogue Centre – a place dear to his heart. Lar is also very involved with the ‘House of Stories’ at Ballyduff and treats us to a favourite recitation.
