Place of Birth: Kevin Barry Street, Wexford
Date Interviewed: 1st February 2011
Summary: Matt Murphy’s father had worked in Pierce’s Foundry in Wexford since shortly after the 1911 Lockout and had risen to foreman. In 1947 he secured a position for Matt in the firm to train as a fitter. However, in 1950, Matt got a job in Johnstown Castle. He worked there until he retired in 1999. Matt carried out research into sulphur deficiencies in Irish soils and he was encouraged to write this up for a Ph.D. This he achieved without first securing a primary degree. Matt dedicated much of his spare time to the Dun Mhuire, Wexford’s parish hall situated on the Main Street. He details how funds were raised to build the hall, the various dances and activities that were held there, and the introduction of bingo in 1961. He talks of those involved and describes Fr. Ned Murphy as “a great man” and “a modern priest”.
