Place of Birth: Kilbrainey, Newbawn, Co. Wexford

Summary: Mamie Murphy grew up in Newbawn where she went to the national school. Later she went to the Vocational in Adamstown and then the Mercy Convent in New Ross. Her memory of Newbawn is of a “dead-end village”. The priest would read out from the pulpit the different amounts contributed by the parishioners. Her father had horses and loved hunting – he was a champion at the RDS show of 1955. Mamie would have liked to train as a nurse but when her mother died of cancer she had to work at home. She recalls riding on a bike to Duncannon with a picnic and seeing the soldiers posted at the Fort. Another pleasure was enjoying a hot saltwater bath in the bath house at Fethard.
