Photo of Person Recorded

Date of Birth: 4th September 1932

Place of Birth: Tagoat, Co. Wexford

Date Interviewed: 21st July 2008

Summary: Margaret ‘Peg’ Murphy has lived in The Cottage, Tagoat where she was born, all her life – in fact she has never wanted to live anywhere else. Life was tough for Peg and her parents – the house only had two bedrooms, no running water, no toilet and no electricity. From an early age Peg was involved in farming and claims she could turn a furrow as well as any man! She remembers having to draw seaweed from the local beach to fertilise the land. Before electricity was installed Peg would have to cycle to Rosslare Harbour carrying two large glass batteries to have them recharged for their radio. The constant sound of passing trucks and cars on the busy road from Rosslare Europort is a background to the interview as Peg’s cottage door is always open to friend and stranger alike.
