Place of Birth: Rathaspeck, Co. Wexford

Date Interviewed: 12th July 2008

Summary: Robert Lambert was interviewed at Kyle Forge storytelling house, a building he helped to restore. Kyle Forge is just a short distance from where Robert lives with his wife Mary. During his life Robert has been a milkman, delivery man, construction worker, farmer and a publican. In part one Robert talks of his early childhood in Rathaspeck, Co. Wexford and of his parents’ decision to move to Dublin. His father was a prominent member of the IRA and during the civil war captained a flying column which carried out ambushes at Ferrycarrig and Killurin. However Robert believes that some publications which claim that his father ordered the execution of certain individuals are totally incorrect and do his father a grave injustice. Part two begins in 1955 when Robert met Mary at a dance in Kevin Street, Dublin. They were married in September 1957 and shortly after moved to London to work at a variety of jobs. However England was not to their liking and they returned to Dublin. Times were tough and work was scarce but, as the family began to grow, Robert bought a van and built up a good business delivering vegetables. Around this time they got their first real home and moved into a house at Wickham Park. However Robert’s ambition was always to return to his native county and in 1972 the family moved to a farm in Kilrane, Co. Wexford.
