Summary: Jimmy Gregan was born in the house he still lives in. He had three brothers and three sisters. The single-storey house was originally thatched and had no electricity or water. The nearby pump still stands at the corner of the road but this would often run dry in summer and Jimmy recalls the horse-drawn water cart supplying the area. School was just across the road. Miss O’Malley was “awful cross”. He and his friends went barefoot in the summer months. Jimmy started ploughing with horses when he was fourteen and talks of the skill required to produce straight drills. The war years were a “sour time” with everything scarce and the black market thrived. Jimmy played football for nineteen years and is Honourary President of his local GAA club.
