Place of Birth: Killurin, Co. Wexford
Date Interviewed: 18th August 2008
Summary: Billy Fox was born in Killurin, Co. Wexford, where he has lived for most of his life. Billy describes a lifelong association with the River Slaney, interrupted only by a brief spell working in England as a young man. He talks about his schooldays, his first job making charcoal to fuel Wexford lorries during World War Two, frosty nights on the river netting salmon with his father, and his involvement with the ESB on the rural electrification scheme. He also talks about the strong local tradition of hurley-making, which he worked at with his uncle, and of his thirty-year plus career in forestry. Billy remembers the importance of the Killurin train station to the local community, the fierce rivalries between teams during the Killurin regattas, and his membership of the local Fife and Drum Band.
