Summary: Peggy Flynn was one of 13 children. Her mother died aged 38 when Peggy was just 12. Life was very tough and they often went hungry at home. Her sister Kitty died aged 9 “choked with worms” from drinking bad water. Peggy never wore shoes until she was 14, walking barefoot through frost and snow. She and her brother would stand where cattle had been lying to warm up their feet. The old cottage they lived in had no toilet – she had to use the fields nearby and clean herself with dock leaves. The family washed in the river below the house. She praises the person who came up with DDT as it got rid of all the fleas!
