Summary: Tish Codd grew up near Rathnure. She walked the two miles to the local national school and later attended Secondary school in Enniscorthy, “a long journey” on a bicycle. After just two years in the Presentation school Tish, then aged fifteen, was offered a job in Billy Conran’s drapery shop in Rathnure. This required three weeks of training in Conrans of New Ross. Her boss had to intervene to find her accommodation as most boarding houses would not take in women, regarding them as being too much trouble! Tish has detailed memories of her years in the shop and describes her duties and the workings of the drapery business. She talks of her dealings with commercial travellers and the goods the shop sold, which included methylated spirits. The licence for the sale of this was held in her name. Tish also talks of her passion for camogie and of her involvement in the sport’s development in the locality.
