Memories of 1916 Oral History Project

Local Stories sought for Commemorations next year

Throughout County Wexford, local people have important memories of 1916.  Some remember experiences of their childhood. Others have memories passed on by their parents, older brothers and sisters or neighbours and friends.  These memories and stories are important.  Part of Wexford’s heritage, they must be captured soon or be lost forever.

The public library service is running a special Memories of 1916 Project within its Oral History Programme.  If you have a story to tell please let it know.  If you know someone with important memories, please encourage them to come forward and nominate them for interview. A form is available on the library website at  and in every branch library

Then the library service will make contact and arrange the interview at a time that suits.

Each Teller will get a copy of the interview for themselves & for their family. It is important family history.

The library service will mind and will hold the interview in Trust for the people of Wexford as part of our local heritage.  Local people and people all over the world will be able to listen to the interview via the library’s website.  Historians, community activists and students will be able to use it for research.  It will be part of a very important community record of Wexford people’s lives in times gone by.

For the commemorations next year, interviews will form part of a special website and will be included in a education pack on “1916 in County Wexford”, which will be distributed to schools countywide. A series of programmes for local radio are being developed also.

Everyone is asked to help make sure that the record of 1916 in County Wexford is as complete as possible.
