Understanding of Resources and Services offered by the Public Library Service
Learners should:
- know what types of information resources and services are available to them in the public library and through Wexford Library Online
- be able to utilise the services and technology available to them in the Public Library Service
- understand how information and knowledge is organised in a library
After completing this Unit, you should be able to:
- list the resources and services available in the public library
- explain how to become members of a public library
- explain and demonstrate how to manage their personal library membership
- outline how materials are organised in the library building
- demonstrate how to locate items using the Dewey decimal classification system
- outline how materials are organised on the library catalogue and perform information searches for items using the On-line Public access Catalogue (OPAC)
- perform on-line searches for items held outside the local library’s collection using the internet
- use relevant software to access electronic sources of information
- recognise different information formats, and select the correct software needed to view and save information
- explain and demonstrate the use of microfilm/fiche readers and printers
- be proficient at researching a chosen topic
