Parish Maps
The parish maps are a new set of computerised maps setting out each catholic parish in Ferns diocese and in County Wexford.
For historical reasons , not all Catholic parish boundaries coincide with the townland boundaries. This results in parts of townlands being included in adjoining parishes. Since townlands are the only clearly defined, official boundaries available, it is impossible to divide them between parishes. Hence to prepare parish maps each townland had to be allocated to a particular parish.
In 1993, written lists of townlands in their parishes were obtained from the parish priests. An analysis of these lists showed that fifty-three townlands were shared between two parishes. Using the priests' lists and an earlier map of the Catholic Diocese of Ferns, and through consultation with parish priests, the townlands in each parish have been assigned now and maps prepared. To allow the computerised maps to be made, divided townlands were allocated to the parish that already had the larger share.
