Opposite Ends of the Spectrum
Art Alongside Project 2005 / 2006
'Opposite Ends of the Spectrum' - Art Alongside Project 2005-2006 This project was based on the theme of ‘opposites’ – from big themes, e.g. creation/destruction, dark/light, beautiful/ugly, fragile/strong, north/south, east/ west, happy/sad, funny/serious to more concrete ideas such as gigantic/minute, light/dark, rough/smooth, shiny/dull, hot/cold, messy/tidy, etc. - and plenty more that the children will come up with by themselves.
The project artists began with a few sessions of skills based workshops before starting the main project. For the 2004/2005 programme entitled ‘Flotsum and Flying Fish‘a very successful partnership was established with the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). Art Alongside will be working with IMMA again this year by linking in with their collection for the final exhibition, which will be shown alongside a selection of work from each school, at the Wexford Arts Centre.
Project Schedule
Opposite Ends of the Spectrum commenced in schools during the week of the 26th September and ran until the week beginning the 6th February, 2006. The county-wide exhibition was held during March 2006.
Age Range
The project was designed primarily for 5th and 6th classes, but was adapted to include younger children in schools where they are in combined classes with 5th and 6th.
The project entailed working with one class in the morning, and one class in the afternoon; unless a particular arrangement was made in the school.
