An archive service is in the process of being established by Wexford County Council, following its appointment of an archivist in February 2002 to manage the Council’s archives, its predecessor bodies and local private collections. This appointment is in line with the Council’s statutory obligations under Section 65 of the Local Government Act, 1994 which obliges all local authorities to make arrangements ‘for the proper management, custody, care and conservation of local records and local archives and for inspection by the public of local archives’ (Section 80 of the Local Government Act, 2001 has since superseded this legislation). The legislation also requires local authorities to retain and manage their current and non-current records and provide suitable premises and facilities for their custody and care. The archivist addresses this requirement through the implementation of a records management system to ensure better record-keeping and administrative efficiency.

At present, the Archive is based in Library Headquarters, Ardcavan where two rooms have been dedicated to archive storage. Permanent accommodation for a county archive is currently under consideration within plans for a new library administrative headquarters.

Wexford County Archive Service will be a repository for the public archives of Co. Wexford, incorporating the archives of all local authority bodies in the county. As such, it will be a rich resource for the study of the origins and development of local government in Co. Wexford. The archives of Wexford County Council are currently in the process of being listed in order to make them available and accessible.

The Archive also houses the records of the predecessor bodies of the present local government system (including materials relating to the Grand Juries, Boards of Guardians, Rural District Councils and Boards of Health and Public Assistance). See Holdings for further details.
