The European Blue Flag Campaign brings together
the tourism and environment sectors at local,
regional and national level in
21 European countries. |

Blue Flag Awarded
Kilmore Quay |
| Note
that 2,400 beaches and marinas are now participating in the
programme. |
| Its
principal objectives are : |
 |
to
ensure and advertise clean and safe beaches and marinas for the
public |
 |
to
educate local authorities, private tourism operations and the
public about the
need and the means to protect the environment, in particular
coastal and
lacustrine environments |
 |
to
create a basis for voluntary environmental action in communities |
 |
to
bring about co-operation between the sectors of tourism,
environment and
education at local, regional and national levels. |
The
activities of the European Blue Flag Campaign revolve around the
awarding of
the widely recognised and respected eco-label - the Blue Flag.
This is given to
beaches and marinas where environmental protection is a high
priority in site
management and information encourages care for the environment.
The
award is granted for one season at a time on the basis
of compliance with 26
criteria for beaches and 16 for marinas. These criteria
cover the same four areas for both beaches and marinas : |

environmental
education and information |
Some
criteria are imperative while others are
guidelines. In the year
2000, a new set of beach criteria will take effect with an
increasing focus on

facilities for disabled people, etc. For marinas, the first

It is a source of great pride to Wexford County Council that the
Kilmore Quay marina has attained the required standard
to fly the
'Blue Flag'. |
